Where Would Grant Wood Work?

The Grant Wood unit study continues with our visit to Grant Wood’s studio.  This is a location he at first used as just a studio, while living in Marion, IA, but then lived in with his mother and I believe his sister.  He finished painting the American Gothic in this studio, and some parts of the studio itself are his work.  The door is the most interesting addition he made.  On the window he put a sort of clock with a hand that he moves that can point to things like “having a party” or “taking a bath”.

We took a tour of the studio which was led by a man who seemed pretty knowledgable, but the tour was obviously inentended for adults.  My kids had fun, but wanted to ask more questions and do more exploring than was permitted.  If nothing else, I think they will remember the door and the tour kept them thinking about Grant Wood.

We home schooled our children for 9 yrs (4 of them)..I loved the unit study approach to learning. Grant Wood is one of our favorite people. My wife and I named out bed and breakfast after him :

Depending on how much you want to spend w/ Grant Wood, I have a personal letter of his I could e-mail you a copy of. He talks about growing up East of Anamosa, walking to town, the smells, the people, etc.

First of all, your bed and breakfast looks wonderful! I love that you have an apple orchard and apple cider press. A copy of that letter would be amazing! Thank you! We are actually already off of Grant Wood. I am sort of backlogging my blog right now, but we hope to go to the Grant Wood Arts Festival in June, at which point we will look at their binders and review the things they learned about Grant Wood. The letter would be an excellent addition, and we can even talk about primary and secondary sources. My email address is crstarlette at aol dot com.
      Thanks again!
